WHAT IS

The Waqf ("Waqf") is an Islamic endowment where any benefits received from the endowment, are donated to charitable projects. It is an ongoing charitable endowment similar to sadaqah jarriyah and is used to develop and support communities.

Waqf could be in the form of land, a hospital, a university, a library, cash or any form of an asset that could benefit the community.

Waqf could be permanent whereby the principal is given away by the Waqif permanently and is not part of the Waqif's estate once it is donated, or it could be timed whereby the principal is not part will be registered under the name of the heirs, and it will be part of Waqif's inheritance after the maturity of the Waqf duration.

Once the Waqif gives away the asset to Waqf, the Waqif will not have any control over the Waqf as it is no longer owned by the Waqif. The possession and ownership is transferred to the Awqaf, who will be responsible for managing the Waqf and distribute the benefits to support communities as per her role as Nazir Al Waqf. The ownership will go back to the Waqif in Timed Waqf.

In simple words, Waqf in Arabic means 'restriction' and Awqaf is the plural. It means locking the asset and donating all benefits arising from it to support communities.
